Good day, friends of real food! It’s a little crazy out there right now, yes? Happily there’s some good crazy along with… the other kind!
Joel Salatin, the US’ pioneer real food farmer, has declared it’s time for a Food Emancipation Proclamation. The idea is simple:
Let small producers legally and freely sell directly to the people who want their food.
I was there at the Summit — fabulous conference!
The article is here and explains the problems and simple solutions with input from not only Salatin, but Edwin Shank who turned his failing dairy farm into a huge multi-state operation; Sally Fallon Morell, President of the Weston A. Price Foundation (I’m a chapter leader since 2011, fabulous organization); Ruth Ann and Elvin Zimmerman, experts in self-sufficiency; and our own Max Kane, founder of FarmMatch which hosts the KY Food Independence Club’s ordering platform. I hope you enjoy the article as much as I did!
PS. Please share this with your Kentucky legislators! Wouldn’t it be awesome to be the first state to formerly declare a Food Emancipation Proclamation? (C’mon, KY has to first at SOMETHING!!!)
I also happened upon this article, published yesterday by Joel Salatin, about the USDA’s “nutrition” coloring book for kids, published by our very own University of KY’s extension office… paid for by you. A little disturbing for those of us advocating that we eat like humans rather than elephants. Sigh.
Food Club suffers a small price increase
Inflation finally caught up with us resulting in the food club no longer breaking even. I don’t take a salary and watch expenses like a hawk, but here we are. Last week, I worked with a business manager and went through the money in and out, line by line, and our margins had simply gotten too thin to keep everything running. I held off as long as I could, most items have not seen a price increase in years, but it was time to bite the bullet. The good news is that 4% is all it takes — roughly 40 cents on a $10 item. This should keep us on solid footing without another increase on the horizon.
I know the economy is as hard on you all, too. I promise to keep a sharp eye on everything and reduce prices where I can. It’s happened before!
As always, every dollar goes back into getting real food from real farms to your table. Thank you for being part of this club — you make a huge difference to Kentucky’s farmers and producers!
